From Oxford, Francis studied in the last days of traditional English art education, gaining a thorough grounding in anatomy, life-drawing, studio operation and artistic craft. Such knowledge and skills, alongside a deep intimacy with the centuries-old English tradition of portrait and landscape painting, have strongly influenced his outlook, perception and approach to artistic practice. Although chiefly a portrait painter, Francis has also been trained in a wide range of artistic forms including printmaking, sculpture and art history, as well as in practical studio craft and other visual traditions such as Tibetan Thangka painting. Francis has exhibited widely, with work in the United Kingdom National collection, as well as private collections in Europe, North America and the Middle East.
