I create my art one stitch at a time with a needle and thread.

I use lustrous silk thread to stitch rays of light and colour onto my own shaky photographs; matte sashiko cotton threads to stitch calm, concentric circles onto repurposed fabrics; and threads of any kind to stitch together found objects and mixed textiles into tangled compositions.

My stitching began with a curiosity about Japanese sashiko embroidery and has since evolved into a practice of art-making that is equal parts exploration and meditation.

Rosemary Burd is a mixed media and textile artist who uses repurposed fabrics, found objects, threads, and original photographs in her artworks. Rosemary has always been a maker, but it is only in the last few years that she has discovered her medium for making art: stitching. She is self taught as an embroiderer and a photographer. Rosemary’s embroidered photographs have been exhibited at Cowichan Valley Arts Council Gallery, Fibreworks Gallery (Madeira Park), Firehall Arts Centre (Vancouver), Propeller Gallery, (Toronto), and Vancouver’s Eastside Culture Crawl. Her textile piece piece, ‘where can we find light in this never-ending shade?’, was shown at the Pendulum Gallery (Vancouver), Vancouver’s Eastside Culture Crawl, and published in the Surface Design Association’s journal Exhibitions in Print (Fall 2021).
