Sally’s work is all about layers. Photographs layered on wood panel, followed by a combination of textures and media ranging from dry wall and fabrics to silver and gold leafing. The final layer usually involves painting with encaustic. This layering process is central to her work as it adds depth and punctuates the dream-like quality that characterises Sally’s images.
Invoking a sense of mystery and isolation in a serene, contemplative sense is more a priority for her than the subject matter itself. Moody nostalgia is Sally’s ultimate goal. The inspiration for Sally’s images largely comes from her travels, which impose constant shifts in reality as she crosses borders, cultures and landscapes, both literal and figurative.
